Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Since 1970, Earth Day has encouraged communities to protect the environment by recycling, protecting wildlife, and reducing waste.

How are you celebrating Earth Day? Explore these ideas to help protect our planet:

Recycle paper to protect the environment

Save trees

Recycling paper helps prevent trees from being chopped down to make new paper. Happily, paper is one of the most widely recycled materials in the world. By some estimates, paper and paperboard make up half of materials recycled in the U.S. Nearly 77% of all U.S. papermakers use some recovered paper to make everything from newspaper to paper packaging to office paper, reports ISRI.

Reduce landfill space

Recycled paper is also known in the recycling industry as “recovered fiber.” Since 1990, Americans have recycled more than 1.1 billion tons of recovered fiber, reports ISRI. By recycling one ton of paper, a person saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space!

Recycle your paper at one of Metro Recycling’s three locations: Valparaiso, Griffith, and Blue Island, Illinois.

Recycle aluminum cans and save energy

Reuse existing materials

Aluminum doesn’t degrade during the recycling process, which means it can be recycled infinitely. Of all the aluminum the U.S. uses, more than 50% is from recycled aluminum scrap, reports ISRI.

Save energy

Aluminum cans are accessible and easy to recycle! Every year, the aluminum cans America recycles helps save the energy equivalent of 26 million barrels of gas.
