Rusty Metal
Recycling Metals

It’s almost August, believe it or not. By this time, you’ve probably dug pretty deep into your tool shed or garage. Did you find a long forgotten shovel, other lawn equipment or patio furniture? Clean out your space and recycle your old rusty equipment at Metro Recycling today.

What is Rust?

In order for a metal, such as steel, to rust it must contain iron! Rust has a reddish-brown color, and it appears on the exterior of the material. Why does rust happen? Rust happens when iron reacts with oxygen from moisture in the air or water.

Can I recycle rusty metals?

Yes, you can recycle rusty metals.

When you recycle at one of three convenient locations in Valparaiso, Griffith, and Blue Island, IL, the rusty metals are then shredded and sent to a facility where scrap is then melted into new steel. (Want to learn more about how steel is processed? Learn more!)

In this process, the rust will melt and re-form into iron. Please note that rusted steel weighs less due to the corrosive behavior of rust.

Help your rusted equipment find new life. Recycle rusty metals at Metro!
